Students Step Into History Through Immersive Civil War Experience
Students recently had the opportunity to explore the American Civil War in an entirely new way thanks to a collaborative effort between Dr. Mortimer and Mrs. Laurie Griffin. Blending historical analysis with emerging technology, the partnership brought hands-on, immersive learning experiences to life—placing students directly into the events they study.
Using the school’s brand-new ClassVR headsets, students were transported to pivotal Civil War locations. They explored the trenches and stood among the rocky terrain of Devil’s Den, gaining perspective on the physical and emotional realities faced by soldiers. The virtual experiences sparked curiosity and discussion, helping students visualize the scale and challenges of wartime environments beyond what textbooks alone can provide.
Students also took on the role of strategists, planning battle approaches for Vicksburg, Gettysburg, and Antietam. Through collaborative analysis, they evaluated geography, troop movements, and historical outcomes, strengthening their critical thinking and problem-solving skills while deepening their understanding of military strategy.
Closer to home, learners examined primary-source maps to trace Sherman’s March through Putnam County. By working directly with historical documents, students connected national events to local history, discovering how their own community intersected with the broader story of the Civil War.
Dr. Mortimer and Mrs. Griffin’s collaboration highlights the power of combining subject expertise with innovative media resources. By integrating immersive technology and primary-source exploration, they created meaningful opportunities for students to engage with history in active, memorable ways.
As classrooms continue to evolve, experiences like these demonstrate how interactive tools and cross-disciplinary partnerships can transform learning—ensuring students don’t just read about history, but truly experience it.
